This is what the Festool Rotex is modeled after. They both perform the same and both have great dust collection. So unless you just want to have a festool in your shop for posting on the gram this is what you should buy and save yourself some money. I have used both and they are equal. With that said this isn't inexpensive but is a great next step for hobbyist and and woodworkers to up their game. The forced rotation gets through those rougher surfaces quick! This mode is great for the lower grits and then you want to switch to orbital for those final grits and better finish. It's really an amazing sander. The weight of it is nice too - it's heavy which I like when sanding tops. If I'm rounding a corner though I'll usually grab my smaller dewalt though cause it lighter and easier to handle in that scenario. It'll cut your sanding time in half all while providing a better finish - aka, money makerI bought one in 2020, and have used it almost exclusively. No complaint whatsoever- endgrain cuttingboards, tables, benches.... everything. Hands down would buy again- I actually decided to leave a review because I am buying another one.I sand a lot of wood, in particular birch plywood and really needed something to cut my sanding time down. I was a bit hesitant about purchasing this since I’m a pretty small person at 100lbs soaking wet and was unsure if I’d be able to use it for long periods. I’m soooo glad I got it. This thing is a beast! Super powerful it has cut down my sanding time in half. It’s surprisingly easy to hold and I can sand down countless sheets without any fatigue with only using one hand to hold it. It’s also a lot quieter than I thought it would be which is great since I can use it late without worrying about my neighbors. It has made all my other sanders obsolete.I originally got this for sanding end-grain cutting boards and it really saves time in that role with it's aggressive cut and larger sanding pad area (6" vs a 5" ROS).I've since used it on other large panels and it works just as well there.it would be a handful on small/delicate sanding jobs but that's not what this tool is designed for so no stars off for that. This thing is a beast. This is one of those tools that I don’t know how I functioned without it. I bought this when there was a fantastic deal here on Amazon. It was marked down, then another $20 coupon, and then if you hit $300 in qualifying items (prior to the $20 off) you got another $55 off. So I added a $12 drill bit set, and after the discounts and taxes I was at about $235. I had been contemplating between getting this and the 6” Festool Rotex. I’m sure that is a fine tool as well, but I could have bought 3 of these for 1 of those, and this thing has saved me so much time since I’ve had it. A good dust extractor is a must. Don’t hesitate if you’re considering this sander. It’s a game changer.I used this sander to supplement the standard rental drum and edge sanders for a red oak hardwood floor sanding job. I had trouble with both the drum sander and edge sander from Home Depot being out of whack. The drum sander was only cutting on the left half of the drum so I couldn't get very close to the walls and had to use the edger more often which left a lot swirl marks. The edger was out of adjustment as well and was cutting at the 9:00 o'clock position instead of the front edge like 12 or 1 o'clock. I eventually got that hang of adjusting that, however.Anyway, after returning the sanders to Home Depot, I set about to repair the issues with this sander an it worked pretty well. I started with 60 grit an ended with 80 grit. Switching to turbo mode seems to have the effect of using a coarser grit paper and makes deeper scratches. I would start with 60 grit turbo until the edger swirl make disappeared, and then I switched the turbo off to remove the turbo scratches. Then I switched to 80 grit non-turbo to remove the 60 grit scratches. (80 grit is where I stopped with the Home Depot sanders.)To blend the random orbital sander scratch pattern from this sander with the liner scratch pattern of the drum sander, I rented a 12" X 18" square buff sander and ran over the whole floor with 80 grit followed by 120 grid. The end result looks pretty good with 3 coats of Bona semi gloss oil-based polyurethane. (The only problem with this approach is that the square buff sander wore down some of the early wood grain sections on the flat sawn boards. However, this is one of those things that I suspect no one will notice except me. If I had to do this over again, I would not have used the square buff sander and instead would have gone over the random orbital scratch patterns by hand with a sanding block and 80 grit paper. I also would have returned the drum sander immediately to Home Depot when I saw it wasn't cutting right and demanded another one or gone somewhere else.)I am sanding my house with this beast. It works like a champ. Buy tons of sanding discs. Like, imagine how many is too many and double it. The attached vacuum is not getting as much sand from the air as I would like, but I’m pretty sure there’s operator error involved. But the paint comes off like a prom dress.I wish I had purchased it before! It is almost 10x faster than regular sanders. Highly recommend! Its strong and will kick back, so be prepared to hold it firmly.I bought this sander because I have a bunch of slabs I recently bought that I want to work on. Based on the reviews I finally pulled the trigger and bought it. I am not disappointed with my purchase. The slabs I have previously had been laquered, so I need to remove that and some glue. This sander in turbo mode works well for those applications. It is also good for helping flatten slabs or laminated pieces. When I use it in normal mode its much quicker than using my old 5" sander. But 6" vs 5" is a big difference, plus the extra power. It takes some time to get use to the size of it and how to balance it. Because of the dust collection port being the long tube on the side, it takes a bit to get used to. I use it with my vacuum, with the vacuum I find there is no dust. When I dont use the vacuum there is lots of dust left on the table, so if you want to get this its best to hook it up to something (especially since it removes lots of material). It has lots of power, especially in turbo mode so it takes some effort to keep it under control. If its a big job you will get tired holding on to it, but would be worse trying to do it with a normal 5" orbital and taking many times longer. It is much better than a belt sander especially for removing lots of material quickly. It leaves a better finish and better for trying to keep things flat. The normal mode is great for typical sanding applications. Due to its size weight, awkwardness, I dont think I would use it on smaller items. So if you are considering purchasing this, think about the application you want it for. If you mainly do small tasks, you wont get the most out of it.I must say I am disappointed in this sander. I expected it to quickly flatten my work piece and I have spent countless hours and used all available abrasive types to see only little progress. It may be that I am trying to even out a 1 " strip of copper embebed in hardwood (Brazilian mahogany). The abrasive pads seem to do a decent job for 20 seconds, then they fall into a very inefficient removal of stock (yes, I take them off and suction them periodically) such that they seem to burnish the metal at even low speeds. Will have to take the piece to a commercial belt sander. The wild vibration in turbo mode makes the sander sometimes difficult to control. The "pigtail" marks on orbital mode are more pronounced than those left by my $90.00 one handed orbital from a big box store.Love this sander. Big upgrade from my makita 5" random orbit sander .Pros: amazing material removal in turbo mode , (i use it alot for epoxy removal before final coat) .: comfort , although you really want to hold it with 2 hands on turbo mode: little to no vibration: exellent finish in random orbit mode .: PRICE , considering a festool rotex is close to $1000. And ive used both .: dust collection , ive used this with both mesh sanding disks and hook and loop 8 hole. And both work terrific with the dust collector i use (festool)I cant really say any cons so far . This is the best "duo mode" sander on the market .Bought it to sand a pretty rough floor of 500 sq ft. I had to go around a number of large posts and under a staircase so a large drum sander would have been impractical. Slipped the hose of my old commercial vacuum cleaner over the attachment and had no dust. Cuts as well as a belt sander but with better control. I used turbo mode with the coarse grits (40-60-80) and switched to orbital after that. Really liked the clip-on bumper so I could get close to the walls without cutting into them. The whole process took days with lots of breaks but the result was worth it.For 1/2 the price of the Festool, but pretty much the same quality, this is a no-brainer. It might be weird to get used to the size/weight if you're coming from a palm sander, but you get over it quickly and never look back. I use this for big jobs and my 5" palm sander for the finer work. This has saved me so much time in my shop, I really wish I had invested in this sooner. If you're thinking about upgrading your sanding, and you can financially afford this, get it. Stop reading this, add it to your cart, and check out. You'll be happy you did.
